Origin and history of the Water dog
This breed is native to the Iberian Peninsula and is believed to be one of the oldest breeds on the planet, some believe that the breed could have existed as early as the Middle Ages or even Roman times. These beautiful dogs were bred for herding sheep in Spain, and also proved to be very good at retrieving game in the water and on land.
They have great popularity in Andalusia, where it is known as "Andalusian Turk" or "Turkish Dog", since it was believed that it descended from animals brought to the country on ships from Turkey, although experts insist on pointing out that the breed existed before that Turkish merchants arrived in Spain.
In 1985, the breed was officially recognized by the Spanish Kennel Club, although the FCI did not permanently recognize it until 1999. Today, more Spanish water dogs are exhibited at dog shows than ever before. However, they remain relatively unknown in other countries and therefore expensive and difficult to obtain.

Character ofthe Water dog
The Spanish Water Dog loves to be in the water and is an excellent swimmer by nature. They boast of having an enormous sense of smell, sight, hearing and they love being outdoors. They are intelligent, sensitive and their even temperament makes them ideal as family pets.
They tend to be a bit distant and wary of people they don't know, but will rarely show any type of aggressive behavior towards a stranger, preferring to keep their distance until they get to know someone.
It is worth mentioning that they are not the best option for first-time owners because a Spanish water dog needs to be in the hands of someone who is familiar with this type of sporting dog and its specific needs.
