Origin and history of the Weimaraner

The Weimaraner is native to Germany, although it is not known for sure if it is specifically from Weimar. The Weimaraner is probably the oldest German breed that has been bred in a pure state since 1900. They have always been highly prized for their elegant appearance, intelligence, and hunting skills.

There are those who believe that the breed shares a common ancestry with the German Shorthaired Pointer, others that the breed arose from the crossing of the Hanoverian hound breeds with the St. Hubert dog.

Its name comes from the Grand Duke of Weimar and dogs of this breed were once the favorites of the nobility in the field of hunting, where they were used to track large prey such as wild cats, deer, bears and wolves. For many years not much was known about his breeding because the Germans kept it a secret. It was not until 1943 that the breed was recognized by the American Kennel Club.

Today in many parts of Europe the Weimaraner is used as a rescue and assistance dog for the disabled, and has also won the hearts of many families by proving to be reliable and loyal companion dogs.

Character ofthe Weimaraner

The Weimaraner is a very intelligent, energetic and resistant dog. They were originally bred for life in the countryside, so they need a lot of exercise and are therefore ideal for families who lead an active outdoor life, who have ample space in their home, whether they live in the countryside in a house with a large garden.

They tend to be very nervous dogs, which means they must be carefully handled and trained from an early age. Successfully training a Weimaraner often requires a lot of time, patience, and understanding.

Weimaraners form strong bonds with their families, so they will be much happier in a home where at least one person stays at home, otherwise they could suffer from separation anxiety, leading to behavioral problems. They are known to follow their owners around the house from room to room so they can be with them.

That said, it should be noted that they are not a good option for first-time homeowners or people who live in apartments.

Curiosities about the Weimaraner

  • Weimaraners were a German secret until the late 1930s.

  • Traditionally, this breed has long had its tail docked. As of 2017 in Spain, under the Animal Welfare Law in force in Europe, it is prohibited for dogs' tails to be docked unless it is for medical reasons.
