    Gos d’Atura Català,Catalan Sheepdog

The Catalan Shepherd Dog is a happy, active and attractive dog, originally from Spain, specifically in the Pyrenees. He was bred to work alongside shepherds caring for and herding large herds of livestock. However, in recent years they have become a popular choice as companion dogs and family pets not only in Spain but in other parts of the world.

They are intelligent and like to please, which means that in the right hands they are easy to train. They also have a lot of energy and therefore should receive the right amount of daily exercise and mental stimulation to be a truly happy dog. For this reason, gos d'atura is more suitable for people who lead an active life outdoors or who live in a house with a large garden or in the countryside.

Origin and history of the Catalan shepherd

The Catalan Sheepdog is originally from the Catalan Pyrenees, where they are known as Gos d'Atura Català. There is very little information about its origins, what is known is that today, the Catalan shepherd dog is one of the most widespread breeds of Iberian shepherds. It is known that it is a very old breed. The most widespread theory is that the Romans introduced two types of dogs to the Iberian Peninsula between 200 and 100 BC. and these were crossed with native Catalan dogs, which produced the Catalan sheepdog.

They were highly appreciated for working and living alongside their owners on farms, herding livestock and guarding properties. During the Spanish Civil War they were used to carry messages and stand guard as sentinels, earning the breed a reputation for being highly intelligent and reliable.

After the Second World War their numbers decreased, but fortunately during the 1970s breed enthusiasts ensured that they did not disappear. Breeders established a careful selective breeding program to save the breed, which proved to be a great success.

These dogs soon became popular throughout Spain thanks to their kind, loyal and brave nature. Today, the Catalan Sheepdog remains one of the rarest breeds in the world, with very few puppies registered each year. It was officially recognized as a breed by the FCI in 1954.
