Origin and history of the Saint bernard
The Saint Bernard is native to Switzerland, descended from the ancient Asian Molossians, specifically the Tibetan Mastiff. Its name comes from the hospice founded by monks in the mountain pass of Great Mount St. Bernhard, between Switzerland and Italy, 2,469 meters above sea level. This hospice acted as a refuge for travelers and pilgrims.
Saint Bernards would originally help pull carts and be watchdogs or companions, but monks soon realized their invaluable ability to act as scouts through deep snow. These dogs were experts at locating lost travelers. When a Saint Bernard found a person, he would lick the person's face and lie down next to him, thus reviving and warming the person. This is how they became famous as rescue dogs, carrying out this invaluable work for three centuries, saving more than 2,000 lives. For a time the breed was also called “Barry” after the dog Barry the Great, who is credited with saving 40 lives.
It is popularly believed that these dogs carry a barrel of brandy around their necks to resuscitate rescued people. However, this myth has its origins in the painting of the English painter Edwin Landseer, who in 1831 immortalized a reanimating Saint Bernard in his painting. a traveler with a barrel around his neck, probably as a decorative element.
From crosses with Newfoundlands in 1830, the first long-haired Saint Bernard dogs appeared. Although it was believed that long hair would help them in the cold snow, it was quite the opposite. Long hair made the ice stick to their fur and made them heavier. Therefore, these long-haired dogs did not participate in the rescue efforts.
In 1884 the "Schweizerische St. Bernhardsclub" (Swiss Saint Bernard Dog Club) was founded in Basel. The Saint Bernard dog was officially recognized as a Swiss breed and the breed standard was declared mandatory. Since then the Saint Bernard has become the Swiss national dog.

Character ofthe Saint bernard
The Saint Bernard is known for being calm, relaxed and low energy. He is kind and patient with children, although they are not particularly playful. They are very loyal and love to please their owner so they can be easy to train. They are social dogs by nature and most get along well with other dogs in the family. They are not big barkers, but their bark is loud.
They are an excellent choice as a family pet, although you will have to be careful with small children due to their large size. They do not like to be left alone and may develop separation anxiety.
Saint Bernards have a very distinctive smell that is quite musky that some people may find difficult to live with. They are also known for drooling a lot, so they are not the best option for those who are very concerned about cleaning the house. On the other hand, another thing to keep in mind is that you have to take care of them from the heat in the summer months, so care must be taken when they exercise, in cars or in warmer rooms, to prevent them from overheating.
