Index
The Thai Ridgeback is a rare breed native to Thailand, where it has been historically trained for hunting and protecting property and people. These beautiful dogs are believed to be one of the purest breeds, as they have not been in contact with other breeds. They retain extremely pure bloodlines and have always been highly regarded in their country of origin.
Despite being a very old breed, it was not officially recognized until 2003. The year in which the FCI (International Cynological Federation) granted definitive recognition and established a breed standard.
Finding a well-bred Thai Ridgeback puppy in Spain, as in Europe in general, is quite a challenge; only in recent years has it begun to gain popularity as a companion animal due to its exotic appearance and its active and familiar temperament.

Origin and history of the Thai ridgeback
The Thai Ridgeback Dog is an ancient breed, there is evidence that they lived on the isolated island of Pho Quoc, in the southeast of Thailand, what is now Vietnam, for over four thousand years. One of the first written records of this breed was found in an ancient manuscript belonging to King Songthan of Ayuttaya (between 1611 and 1628). They were used for hunting in most of Thailand and were also used as guard dogs to escort carts and take care of people. It is a practically pure breed since thanks to the remoteness of these islands and the poor transportation systems in the eastern part of Thailand this breed remained unchanged for many years, because it had little chance of crossing with other breeds.
It was not until modern means of transportation were introduced to Thailand that the breed became more well known. In Thailand, it has always been a "status symbol" for anyone who owned one. Both the Thai government and military have always held the breed in high esteem.
The number of the breed remains low even in Thailand, but thanks to careful and selective breeding their numbers are slowly increasing. The first Thai Ridgebacks were exported to the United States in 1994, when a gentleman named Jack Sterling discovered them during a trip to Bangkok. He called them "Thai Ridgeback Dogs", although at that time they were called Mah Thai Lung Arn. He exhibited three of them at a rare breed dog show held in Washington DC and his dogs won. Then it began to export to other countries around the world, where the breed quickly found followers. However, as we've mentioned before, anyone looking to share a home with a Thai Ridgeback will have to get on a waiting list to have the pleasure of doing so, with the good news that the wait will be worth it.

Character ofthe Thai ridgeback
Thai Ridgebacks are active and energetic dogs, boasting great climbing and jumping abilities. They form very strong bonds with their owners, but can be quite distrustful of strangers, which makes them the perfect guard dog.
He is sociable, affectionate and very smart so housetraining him won't be too difficult, but they are dominant dogs by nature, which means they need to be handled firmly from the beginning so they understand their place in a pack and what is expected. from them. It is important that they are well socialized from an early age so that they become mature, outgoing and balanced dogs. Their socialization should include introduction to many new situations, noises, people, other animals and dogs.
