Origin and history of the Canary prey

The Presa Canario is originally from the Canary Islands, bred mainly as a working dog. It is believed to have been developed during the 15th and 16th centuries, when Spanish conquistadors purchased mastiff-type dogs on the islands. They crossed their dogs with breeds such as the Bardino Majero, now extinct, as well as with bulldogs, English Mastiffs and Hispanic breeds such as the Presa Española, in order to produce a robust, loyal and brave working dog, which would protect livestock and property. .

The Presa Canario proved to be a very popular fighting dog until a law was passed prohibiting this blood sport in the 1940s. The number of breeds decreased due to the ban and the emergence of other breeds and the Presa Canario was only I saw them actually working on farms and as guard dogs rather than being chosen as a family pet or companion dog.

It was not until the 1970s that interest in the breed was revived when dedicated enthusiasts set out to resurrect the breed to be a strong, very large, outgoing, confident and calm dog that boasted being extremely territorial and protective. The Presa Canario has always been known for defending its owner and their property without ever backing down, which is a trait that has been highly prized in the breed.

In 1982 a club of the breed was established in the Canary Islands which was recognized by the Royal Central Canine Society of Spain or RSCFRCE. They were subsequently recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1996, the United Kennel Club in 2003, but have not yet been accepted as a breed by the Kennel Club.

Character ofthe Canary prey

The Presa Canario may be imposing and impressive to look at, but they are known to be calm, loving dogs that want nothing more than to be included in everything that happens in the home.

As the Presa Canario is a large and imposing dog, it needs to be trained correctly from an early age. They are not the best choice for first-time owners because they need to be handled and trained by people who are familiar with large, dominant dogs. They are naturally distrustful of people they have never met, which is why they have been highly valued as guard dogs in the Canary Islands.

They have a very protective nature in their nature, so they will always be alert in monitoring and protecting their owners and their property.

Because they are so intelligent, they need to be given a lot of things to occupy their minds and they need plenty of daily exercise to be truly happy and well-rounded. Otherwise they will get bored and this could lead to destructive behavior, which is their way of relieving the stress they may be feeling and not necessarily because they are naughty.
