Pomeranians are a true “toy” dog. They are really outgoing, happy, friendly and affectionate. They are the smallest of the Spitz-type dogs and look very similar to a fox, with erect and triangular ears, almond-shaped eyes, and a wide, round forehead. They are easily recognizable by their luxurious, fluffy double coat. Its tail is carried elegantly rolled over its back.

They have an interesting ancestry, with the German Spitz being one of the dogs used to create the breed, and Queen Victoria popularized these little dogs during her reign in the 1900s.

Today, the Pomeranian is so popular thanks to their sweet temperaments combined with the fact that these little dogs are super intelligent and love to please. They form extremely strong bonds with one person in a home, but are always friendly with other members and people they meet, especially when well educated and socialized from a young age and in a happy environment.

Pomeranians have a wide variety of colors. Normally the bright red color is the one most associated with the breed, but any color from black to white to sand tones are acceptable, including chocolate.

Origin and history of the Pomeranian

Originally, in the 19th century, they were larger. The smallest member of the Spitz family, it boasts hardy sled dog ancestors. Only when the breed was brought to England was it nicknamed Pomeranian (it was named after the region between Poland and Germany called Pomerania where they were developed), but these early dogs were not the "Poms" known today. They weighed up to 13 kg. and they were often white.

They were the favorite dogs of German Queen Victoria. By breeding their dogs the size of the breed was reduced to its current size (toy size).

In 1891 the first Pomeranian club was established and a breed standard was established shortly after. These small dogs continued to gain popularity and were a favorite of the well-to-do ladies of the time. In fact, two Poms were among the 3 dogs that survived the sinking of the Titanic in 1912, both saved by their owners. Today, Pomeranians remain one of the most popular choices for pet dogs thanks to their small stature, adorable appearance, and affectionate and loyal nature.

Character ofthe Pomeranian

Lively, bold and busy, the Pomeranian makes the most of every day. This breed is curious, playful, self-confident (even arrogant) and attentive, always ready for a game or an adventure. Reserved towards strangers, some can be territorial with other dogs and some enjoy a good barking session.

As mentioned above, they may be small in stature, but they pack a lot of personality and are known for being totally outgoing. Being very intelligent, the Pomeranian knows how to get its way, so it needs to be well trained from a young age.

Poms are very quick to learn new things including the good and the bad. If allowed to get their way, they tend to show a more dominant side to their character, which often causes the dog to become unruly, therefore more difficult to handle.

It is essential that puppies are well socialized from a young age. They have no idea of their size, which can be a problem when they encounter other dogs, because it is in their feisty nature to do so, regardless of how big the other dog may be.

They do not like to be left alone for short or long periods of time and are known to suffer from separation anxiety, meaning they are not a good choice for people who spend a lot of time away from home. They are a very good option for people who spend most of their time at home, even when everyone else is out.
