Origin and history of the Labrador retriever

It is popularly believed that the Labrador Retriever originated on the coast of Newfoundland where fishermen used a similar looking dog for fishing. It is believed to have been created by crossing St. John's Spaniels with other smaller breeds of Spaniels. The St. John's Spaniel is also an ancestor of the Newfoundland, closely related to the Labrador, which is an excellent strong and skilled swimmer, with a tough coat, webbed feet and a distinctive otter-like tail. It was also used to retrieve game, which often occurred in difficult environments such as aquatic swamps.

It is considered to originate in the United Kingdom, there they were introduced at the end of the 19th century by the Earl of Malmsbury and Colonel Peter Hawker. Both became interested in the breed and organized the importation of a selection of dogs, achieving great expansion and popularity of the breed.

Today, the Labrador Retriever remains one of the most popular breeds and for good reason: they are reliable and incredibly loyal, making them the perfect family pet and companion to share a home.

Character ofthe Labrador retriever

Labradors are known for their friendly, playful and intelligent nature, they adapt very easily both in the field and at shows, at home or as an assistance dog. They have an excellent sense of smell and love water. They need a home environment where they receive plenty of attention, training exercise, and mental stimulation, but they are one of the best choices for first-time dog owners due to their affectionate and loyal nature.

They enjoy interactive games that stimulate them mentally and thus reduce the risk of developing unwanted behaviors related to boredom. It is possible to have a Labrador in an apartment as long as he is given enough daily exercise and is not left cooped up for too long.
