The Spanish greyhound is one of the most characteristic breeds of the Iberian Peninsula. Its thinness, arched back, elongated head and height of 60/70 cm. they characterize it. They are docile, calm and loyal dogs, very good with their family and children. They have a reputation for being distant and shy, so they are very calm inside the home, while outside they are tireless explorers. They really enjoy good outdoor exercise sessions. In winter you cannot forget to cover them well since they are very cold and will like to be very warm.

Historically they were dogs bred for hunting and racing. They have great physical capacity at the cardiac, pulmonary and muscular levels that allows them to reach 60 km/h. For this reason they have a great predisposition to work and a love for exercise and speed.

Unfortunately, due to its characteristics, it is one of the breeds that suffers the most abuse as it is used exclusively as a racing or hunting dog and is commonly found abandoned or mistreated when the season ends.

Origin and history of the Spanish greyhound

There are different theories in relation to its origin but what is clear is that the representations in Ancient Egypt seem to show the antiquity of its origin. That is why it is believed that it is a descendant of dogs from Ancient Egypt. Some authors say that the Spanish Greyhound is a descendant of the Roman Vertades, which in turn descends from the Egyptian Greyhound. Hence its resemblance to that pharaonic dog. Another theory maintains that it was the Celts who brought this breed when they settled in Gaul and that is why in Latin it is known by the name Gallicus canis. And then we have another hypothesis that they arrived with the invasion of the Muslims at the beginning of the 8th century, according to writings that seem to indicate that dogs similar to the Spanish greyhound called saluki were brought with the Arab conquest. In Spain there are records of the greyhound dating back to the 2nd century BC. c.

In any case, what we do know is that it was in the Middle Ages when it was established as a breed and began to be used to hunt hares and rabbits. The ancient work in hunting has been maintained to this day and is one of the dog breeds with the highest rate of abandonment and abuse. But thanks to the tireless fight for its well-being, the Spanish greyhound is currently an option for many families who want to adopt a dog, due to its well-known calm temperament and great company.

Character ofthe Spanish greyhound

It is one of the noblest dogs that exist and adapts perfectly to life inside the house. It is a very docile and calm breed inside the home that spends most of its time sleeping, but they are also very active and need large doses of physical activity. Therefore, they are perfect for living in a relaxed environment at home and enjoying long walks, excursions or good physical activity outdoors.

They have a reputation for having a serious and withdrawn character at times, distrustful of strangers, however they are very affectionate when they gain confidence. They do not like to be alone and are characterized by their sensitivity and sweetness.

They tend to get along well with cats and other dogs, in addition to being very good with children.

As for its training, it is not one of the breeds that stands out the most, but with consistency and patience in its education, it is relatively easy to get it to learn good manners and know how to behave.
