Origin and history of the German shepherd

The German Shepherd we see today was first developed in Germany in the late 18th century by a cavalry captain named Max von Stephanitz. He spent thirty-five years developing and promoting the breed to produce a reliable and attractive dog. He encouraged his country's police forces to use German shepherds in their work, and during World War I, thousands formed part of the German army.

German Shepherds were originally bred as herding dogs and their job was to guard large flocks, but the demand for herding dogs decreased over time, and it was then that Max von Stephanitz stepped in to promote other skills of the breed, while also honed specific traits, such as stamina, strength, speed, intelligence, and the desire to please and work.

At the end of the 19th century, the first Purebred Dog Club was created in Germany, called the Phylax Society (Phylax means "guardian" in Greek). It was created by Max von Stephanitz together with other breed enthusiasts. Their goal was to standardize the breed throughout the country. When the first club was dissolved, Stephanitz created the German Shepherd Dog Society and his dog, Hektor, was the first registered. He then changed his dog's name to Horand von Grafrath and used it in breeding programs to produce strong, hardy German Shepherd dogs.

The breed has evolved over the last fifty years or so with a marked difference in the "type" of breed that appears on the scene. Recently, a long-haired variety of the breed became part of the standard recognized by the Kennel Club.

Character ofthe German shepherd

German Shepherds are famous for their intelligence and loyalty. However, they are not the best choice for first-time owners, as they must be handled experienced and calm, with a firm but gentle hand. These dogs must know their place in the pack and that their owner is the alpha dog, otherwise they could begin to display dominant behaviors which can lead to all sorts of problems that can make a German Shepherd much more difficult to handle. drive.

German Shepherds respond very well to positive reinforcement training because they are sensitive by nature. They do not react well to any type of rough handling which may have an adverse effect on the dog's nature. They can be a little territorial, something that must be taken into account when you know that someone is going to visit the house and which is why they have always been so appreciated as guard dogs.

German Shepherds are high maintenance and love to be with owners who have time to dedicate to them, they get along well with children and other pets if they grow up together. They need at least 2 hours of daily exercise which should be combined with plenty of mental stimulation, if left to their own devices and not given the right amount they can become a bit destructive and noisy in the home which could be due to sheer boredom.

Although very versatile, a German Shepherd would not do well living in an apartment and would ideally have a large, secure garden. The German Shepherd prefers to live in a structured family environment and thrives on human company, meaning they are best suited to homes where one person stays home when others are away.
