Origin and history of the English pointer

It is one of the most popular dogs, but the story of its origins remains a bit confusing. There are those who say that it derives from the Spanish Pointer, others that it comes from the Burgos Perdiguero or the Portuguese Perdiguero, but what is known is that it was in England where its selection continued, perfecting until it gave rise to the breed that we know in the present. Several breeds from Europe are believed to have been purchased in England, where they were crossed with chosen native breeds, including Irish Setters, Greyhounds, Bloodhounds, Foxhounds and Bull Terriers.

What is certain is that the pointer already existed as such in the 17th century and that it was used to point out prey. Precisely, its name comes from the English "to point", which means to point (pointer) and which refers to the very particular behavior of this breed during hunting.

There are also known to be Pointer paintings dating from the 15th and 18th centuries.

Pointers today are not only popular for their hunting characteristics but have won the hearts of households by having a gentle, placid and affectionate nature, especially when around children.

Character ofthe English pointer

The English Pointer is usually very dynamic, curious and energetic. He is also friendly and low aggressive. This is because they were developed as "pointing" dogs, so they only have to point to prey, not attack. They are loyal, gentle and very tolerant so they get along very well with children and other animals, which is why they are perfect family pets, especially for families that spend a lot of time outdoors.

That said, when a Pointer has received enough daily exercise and plenty of mental stimulation, he will be very happy to come home and relax with his family. They are a good option for first-time owners, as long as they have time to dedicate to them.

Pointer puppies are known to be a bit clumsy, "accident prone", so care will need to be taken around small children when playing together in case a small child is accidentally knocked over. It is important that they are well socialized from an early age.

They may suffer from separation anxiety if left alone for too long, especially if they are not given enough exercise and daily mental stimulation.

As mentioned above, Pointers love to be able to roam outside, but yards need to be safe so they don't escape, keeping in mind that they risk injury if they hit a road.
