Origin and history of the Doberman

The history of the Doberman is fascinating, as the breed owes its origins to a German tax collector named Herr Karl Friedrich Louis Dobermann, who is credited with creating the breed in the 19th century. He was not only a tax collector, but also a "dog catcher." Herr Dobermann worked as a night watchman and, being a dog catcher, was in a privileged position to choose the type of dogs he needed. His main concern when developing his "perfect" dog was his character rather than his appearance or conformation.

Herr Dobermann wanted to develop a brave, bold and intelligent dog to work alongside him. Guard dogs were required to have a "good sense of smell and a strong mouth" with a natural ability to guard and protect. He began selectively breeding dogs to produce all of these traits, and at first the dogs he bred were known as "Dobermann's Hundes." They quickly gained a reputation for being strong, reliable, and more than capable of hunting and killing vermin.

The actual breeds that Herr Dobermann used to create his dogs remain a bit of a mystery as he did not keep any records, but according to his son, Herr Dobermann had a brave, bold and loyal dog named "Schnupp" which he crossed with a female named " Bisart". They produced puppies with black and rust-colored markings and one of the puppies named "Pinko" was born with a naturally curled tail. It was also stated a little later that the breeds used to develop the Doberman were the German Shepherd, the German Pinscher, the Great Dane, and a short-haired hunting dog.

In 1933, the German Dobermann Club re-examined the origins of the Dobermann and concluded that the German Pinscher was the breed's main ancestor.

But the story did not end there, because in 1947 another man named Herr Gruenig stated that Dobermans descended from the Beauceron thanks to the conformation and personality of the breed. Early photos of the breed show that some Dobermans of the era resembled butcher dogs while others looked more like Rottweilers.

Over the years, the Doberman became a favorite of the police force, as well as being a popular companion and family pet thanks to its loyal, reliable and intelligent nature.

Character ofthe Doberman

The Doberman is often described as a bold and proud dog, but at the same time extremely loyal, devoted and affectionate. They are very intelligent, with the disadvantage that, being so intelligent, they can be quite manipulative. They are calm and friendly, forming strong bonds with their owners. They need to be handled and treated with the respect they deserve and never harshly. When these dogs are given time, patience, and a lot of kindness, owners are rewarded with a reliable canine companion.

They are famous for their natural ability to protect and guard, which they will do as soon as they settle into a new home. They tend to be very protective of the children in the house, which can be a problem when someone visits the house. They are quite cautious around strangers, which is a natural reaction for a dog that was originally bred to watch over people and protect their property. Dobermans thrive on human company and being around the people they love. They like the "comforts of home."

In recent years, more responsible Doberman breeders have taken the time to temperament test their stud dogs, as well as the puppies they raise, to ensure they are good companions and family pets.

Curiosities about the Doberman

  • Dobermanns are very intelligent and have therefore always been used by police and armed forces around the world.

  • Dobermanns are considered war heroes for the work they did alongside man during the two world wars.

  • It is illegal to cut the tail and ears of Dobermanns in Spain, established in the European Convention on the Protection of Pet Animals, a regulation for animal welfare in force in Europe since 1987 and which Spain did not join until 2017.
