The English Cocker Spaniel was originally bred as a hunting dog, so it should always be considered as such and not as a “stuffed animal.” They are happy and energetic dogs that adapt well to most lifestyles but will only be fully happy if their exercise needs and a life outdoors are indulged, otherwise they could become an overweight and nervous dog. Cockers are extremely intelligent, boast a gentle and patient nature, and are never happier than when exploring the garden park or countryside with their nose to the ground.

The dogs we see today were recognized as a breed when the Kennel Club was created in 1873. There are two different types of Cocker Spaniel, one that is used in the countryside as a working dog and is therefore slightly lighter , and another that is a show dog that has a heavier and more robust structure.

Origin and history of the Cocker spaniel

Cocker Spaniels have a fascinating ancestry being descendants of one of the oldest breeds, the spaniel. There are records of spaniels dating back to Shakespeare's time during the 16th and 17th centuries. It is believed that spaniels could have their origin in Spain, especially because of the name "spaniel" which could come from the word Hispania.

Over time, spaniels were bred specifically to work as hunters, whether they were required to work on land or in swamps and water.

In 1885 a breed standard was established and enthusiasts introduced more desired traits into the breed. Over time, the Cocker Spaniel became a consistent winner, not only at dog shows, but also among families, due to its charming appearance and ultra-friendly nature.

Character ofthe Cocker spaniel

Cocker Spaniels are known for their gentle and affectionate nature. They are full of life and are always ready and eager to please. They are incredibly loyal, showing determination and resilience when needed.

They are quite sensitive to loud noises, which can stress them out. Cockers need to receive plenty of mental stimulation and physical activity to be truly happy and healthy. They also love water, so keep that in mind when walking near it. Another thing worth noting is that many show Cocker Spaniels have retained their natural "working" instinct, which is another reason they need to be kept busy and well exercised.

Curiosities about the Cocker spaniel

  • Tail docking has been carried out on Cockers for centuries. However, today this practice has been prohibited in Spain for the welfare of the dog.
