The Chow Chow is distinguished by its particular blue tongue and its beautiful coat. They are characterized by being a little distant, but they are extremely loyal and devoted to their owners, above all, to the person in the house who cares for them the most.

They are not the best option for first-time owners, since Chow Chows must be well trained and educated from an early age by people who are familiar with this type of dog, otherwise they could impose themselves and begin to show the more dominant side of their nature.

Origin and history of the Chow chow

Studies have shown that the Chow Chow already existed in China in the 11th century BC, when they were described as blue-tongued dogs with rough fur and straight hind legs. Although some enthusiasts of the breed believe that it is not native to China but rather that it was the Mongols who introduced it when they invaded China about 3,000 years ago.

The breed has always been considered a "hunting" dog and was used to track larger prey such as wolves and leopards. During the winter months, these powerful dogs were also used to pull sleds. There is evidence that a Chinese emperor owned about two thousand Chow-type dogs in the 7th century AD, which he also used as hunting dogs. Chows also have great tracking capabilities and are still used for this purpose in China. Curiously, some monasteries still breed blue Chow Chows.

The Chow first appeared in Europe in the 18th century, when the dogs were brought from China on cargo ships.

Character ofthe Chow chow

Chow Chows are known for being loyal, aloof and dignified dogs, quite independent by nature. They are often said to be more cat-like than dog-like. They tend to be cautious around strangers, but with time and patience and once they meet someone, they accept being around them without a problem. Additionally, they usually form a strong bond with a single person in a home, usually the one who cares for them the most, although they also form strong bonds with the entire family.

They are very intelligent dogs, and can have a strong character, so their training and socialization must begin from an early age, for the same reason they are not a good option for first-time owners. The Chow can suffer from separation anxiety, which can be a real problem for people who spend all day at work. They tend to be very protective of their family and property, meaning they are very quick to alert their owner when strangers are around. However, they are very good with children, as long as they have grown up with them.

It should also be noted that the nature of a Chow is to chase anything that moves, which means that you have to be very careful when walking but curiously they do not like to chase anything that the owner throws at them, it is something that these dogs do not. They are not interested at all.

Curiosities about the Chow chow

  • The Chow Chow is the only dog, other than the Shar Pei, that has a blue tongue.

  • It is believed that the 7th century emperor of China owned 2,500 Chow dogs that he used for hunting.
