Origin and history of the Chihuahua
Although its origin is still disputed, the Chihuahua first appeared in Mexico, this can be deduced thanks to archaeological finds and Mexican folk tales. There is a belief that Chihuahuas are descendants of dogs called Techichi that existed in ancient times. It is said that the Toltecs, an ancient Mexican civilization, buried these small dogs with their dead because, according to their belief, they guided them after death. This theory about the origins of the Chihuahua is supported by dog burials found dating back to 300 BC.
The first Chihuahua called "Midget" was registered in the United States in 1904 and the breed caused a sensation from that moment on. They were very popular especially among women who wanted very small companion dogs. But it wasn't long before these tiny dogs became a firm favorite in the rest of the world.

Character ofthe Chihuahua
Chihuahuas have an alert and feisty personality which makes them defend themselves when they feel they have to. They are a "big" dog in a small body and will take on the world without hesitation. They are energetic and very intelligent, which is one of the reasons they remain such popular companion dogs.
They are quite cautious and cautious by nature, but when they get to know a person they feel good about them. They also tend to be a little stubborn so they must be educated from an early age, as they can become a little dominant, unruly and more difficult to handle. If overly pampered, Chihuahuas can become a little defensive and protective of their owners.
Over the years and as better breeding practices have been established in reputable breeders, the temperament of the Chihuahuas we see today have improved. The current breed standard clearly states that the temperament should be "cheerful and intelligent."
Chihuahuas are cautious by nature and prefer to evaluate things before doing anything, which includes approaching people they don't know. But once they are happy with a situation and a person, they relax and become much more receptive. They are very sensitive, curious and like to be in company, whether with a person or another dog. If left alone for too long they can suffer from separation anxiety and become destructive.
Curiosities about the Chihuahua
In 1948, a Texas senator wanted to pass state legislation that would make the Chihuahua the official dog of the state because he liked the breed so much. Their argument was that, although Chihuahuas came from Mexico, they also came from Texas.
Chihuahuas are believed to be the only domestic dog breed native to the American continent.
The Chihuahua is considered the smallest breed of dog in the world. It has a height that ranges from 15 to 20 centimeters and a weight of between 2 to 3 kilos.
The real name is “Chihuahueño” which means “arid and sandy place” in Tarahumara.
