Origin and history of the Maltese bichon

The Maltese is one of the oldest breeds on the planet. What is believed to be a child's toy of a Maltese dating back eight thousand years has been found and Charles Darwin has estimated that the breed dates back to 6000 BC.

Greek art includes Maltese-type dogs from the 5th century onwards. There is evidence that they even erected tombs for favored Maltese. Although the hallmark of the Maltese is their long, silky, dazzling white hair, they came in different colors. At the beginning of the 14th century, they became favorites of the upper class. They can be seen in many paintings and this includes royalty with Queen Elizabeth I as well as Queen Victoria having been painted with their loyal white companions. Writers in subsequent centuries continually commented on its diminutive size. However, these little dogs were never common, and an 1830 painting titled "The Lion Dog of Malta: The Last of His Breed" suggests that the breed may have been endangered.

The name lion dog probably arose from the custom of dog fanciers, particularly those in the East, of trimming dogs to look like lions.

Character ofthe Maltese bichon

The Maltese is often mistakenly considered a terrier, but it is not and therefore does not have a "terrier" mentality. They may seem delicate and fragile with their long coats and buns, but in reality the Maltese is a small, determined and robust dog by nature. They are fearless and never afraid to show their feelings and, being so intelligent, Maltese quickly learn to please their owners.

They are affectionate, and since they love to receive all the attention possible from people, they hate being left alone for long periods of time. Even as a Maltese gets older, their energy levels remain high, meaning these little dogs remain lively and playful well into their golden years.

They suffer from separation anxiety, which can lead to dogs developing unwanted behavioral problems, such as howling, barking, chewing on furniture, and scratching on doors and floors. They are the ideal choice for people who work from home or spend a lot of time at home, but the Maltese is not a good choice for people who are rarely home, because they would be a very unhappy dog.
