The Bichon Frize is a small dog that boasts a wonderfully affectionate and lovable personality. They are good with children, which is another plus, since many small dogs find it difficult to deal with children.
The Bichon Frize loves to be the center of attention and despite their size, they are extremely confident and outgoing, and they are also very intelligent, which makes them great fun to have around. They hate being left alone and often suffer from separation anxiety, which could be a disadvantage of sharing a home with a Bichon Frize. It must also be taken into account that Bichons require a high level of maintenance in terms of grooming, since their coat needs professional grooming every 4 or 6 weeks, which can considerably increase the cost of their maintenance.

Origin and history of the Bichon frize
The Bichon Frize is believed to be native to the Mediterranean region of Europe and is often known as the "Tenerife Dog" thanks to 14th century sailors finding it on the island of Tenerife. These they took home and often exchanged for other objects. Bichons soon became popular within the upper classes of many European countries such as Spain, Italy and France, thanks to their adorable appearance and cheerful character.
At the end of the 19th century, bichons were also owned by citizens and many dogs were often found in circuses as performance dogs, as they were very quick to learn new tricks.
In 1933, the president of the Toy Club of France established a breed standard together with the Friends of Belgian Breeds. At that time, they had two names: "Teneriffe" and "Bichon", so it was decided to merge the two by calling the breed "Bichon Frisé". In 1959 it was officially recognized by the FCI.
