The Akita Inu is a primitive Spitz-type dog native to the mountainous regions of Japan. There are two types: the American Akita and the Japanese Akita Inu. Both are large, powerful dogs that impose their presence anywhere. The Akita Inu has a calm nature and knows how to be sensitive and affectionate with the members of its social group.

It is not the type of dog that suits everyone and is not a good choice for first-time dog owners, as it must be trained and handled by people who are familiar with the needs and character of such a dog. large and dominant, plus he doesn't really like living with other dogs. His training and socialization must begin from an early age and his education must be constant throughout the dog's life so that he understands not only his place in the pack, but also what the owner expects of him. The Akita Inu is a very good escape artist and has a great prey drive, making it best suited for those with very secure backyards.

Origin and history of the Akita inu

The Japanese Akita Inu is a very old dog, originating from a region of Japan known as Tohoku, which is located in the northernmost region of the country. The area consists of 6 prefectures, one of which is known as Akita. The breed was used as a fighting dog in cities, while in the countryside it was used for hunting in mountainous regions. Wealthier people also had Akitas as guard dogs.

Japanese history attributes the founding of the Akita breed to ancient Matagi. It is one of the oldest native dogs in the country, which was originally bred to hunt large animals, such as deer, wild boar and bear. Unfortunately, the number of the breed was reduced during World War II, when many Akitas were slaughtered by the military, as well as being eaten by their owners due to lack of food during the war years.

In 1931, the Akita was declared the national dog of Japan and new efforts were made to recover the breed's numbers. In 1934 a standard was established to ensure the purity of the breed. Only four coat colors are accepted according to the strict standard set by the associations.

One of the breed's leading enthusiasts was Helen Keller, an author, humanitarian and lecturer, who is believed to have been the first person to bring Akitas to the United States in 1937.

Character ofthe Akita inu

These great dogs form strong bonds with their owners and families, but retain an independent side to their nature, being a bit stubborn and reserved with strangers. Therefore, it is necessary to handle them with a firm but gentle hand. Training an Akita Inu is essential, as if allowed, they will take on the dominant role simply because it is in their nature. For this reason it is not a breed for every type of person.

They are known for being extremely clean dogs and can sometimes be quite feline in their cleaning habits, often washing their faces with their paws.

Due to their size, they are not the best option for families with small children, they are more suitable for homes with older children and who, therefore, know how to behave with such a large dog.

Curiosities about the Akita inu

  • When babies are born in Japan, families are given a small statue with the image of an Akita, which is believed to bring long life, happiness and health to the child.

  • Japanese Akitas like to keep themselves clean and wash themselves like cats.
