Origin and history of the American akita

Originally, the history of the American Akita was the same as that of the Japanese Akita. Their origins date back to 1603, when they were used as fighting dogs. Coming from the Akita region, they were called “Matagi Akitas”. Starting in 1868, the breed began to be crossed with Tosa and Mastiffs, which is why the size of the breed increased, but the traits of Spitz-type dogs disappeared.

During the Second World War (1939-1945), dog skin was used to make military clothing. The police ordered that all dogs except the German shepherds be captured for military duties. It was then that some fans crossed their dogs with German shepherds to try to avoid the law. At the end of the Second World War, the number of Akitas had been dangerously reduced and there were 3 different forms of Akitas: 1) Matagi Akitas 2) Akitas fighting dogs 3) Akitas/German Shepherds. During the breed restoration procedure, a large number of Akitas that showed characteristic features of the influence of the Mastiff or German Shepherds were brought to the United States by the American military. These delighted breeders in the US and the breed developed thanks to the progressive increase in the number of breeders and its popularity. The American Akita Club was created in 1956. This is how Akitas in the US became very different dogs from those found in Japan. They were developed under a unique form whose type and characteristics remained unchanged since 1955. The situation is noticeably different in Japan where the Akita was crossed with Matagi Akitas to rebuild the old type of pure breed.

Today and until a modification is made to the law, the American Akita is considered a PPP breed in Spain. Reason why you must have a license for legal possession, as well as civil liability insurance and always use a muzzle and leash in public spaces.

Character ofthe American akita

Akitas are very intelligent dogs and learn quickly. They have an independent and strong character, which means that they are not the best choice for first-time owners and need to be socialized from an early age. They have been bred to protect, so that trait is ingrained in their genes, which means that they have a reserved attitude towards strangers and great care must be taken when introducing a dog to people and anyone visiting the home. Akitas are very perceptive and easily recognize people whose intentions are not welcome without needing to be trained to do so.

Despite being robust and strong dogs, they are sensitive, so they benefit from positive reinforcement training and do not respond well to rough handling. Akitas form a very strong bond with their owner; at home they will be a docile, distant and calm dog. In addition, they have affinity and patience in contact with children and are also very good with older people.

Curiosities about the American akita

  • They have webbed toes that help Akitas distribute their weight more evenly when walking in the snow.

  • Akitas resist the cold very well thanks to their coat and build.

  • Helen Keller is believed to have been the first person to introduce the Akita to the United States in 1937 and described this breed as gentle and trustworthy.
